Yatabe lady's slipper (Cypripedium yatabeanum) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Orchidaceae family. It is a highly distinctive species within the genus Cypripedium, prized by horticulturists for its unique floral architecture and rarity. As a specialized crop, it represents a niche category in high-end ornamental gardening and botanical preservation.

The native distribution of this orchid includes the Russian Far East, specifically Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, as well as parts of Japan and Alaska. It naturally inhabits cool, moist forest environments, thriving in shaded areas with humus-rich, well-draining soils. Understanding these native habitat conditions is critical for successful cultivation in non-native environments.

Botanically, the plant features a rhizomatous growth habit with erect leafy stems growing to roughly 25-40 cm. The leaves are broad and prominently veined. The signature bloom consists of a pouch-like labellum that is typically yellowish-green, often marked with brown or purple spotting. This visual characteristic is the primary reason for the plant's appeal in ornamental landscapes.

Agricultural requirements focus on site selection and soil management. The plant demands a cool, semi-shaded location and a substrate that is loose, acidic, and exceptionally well-drained. Unlike many common garden crops, it is sensitive to waterlogging, which necessitates the use of specialized growing media such as volcanic rock, bark, and leaf mould mixtures to ensure proper aeration for the roots.

Regarding plant health, the main challenges include preventing root rot, which is common in stagnant or overly dense soil conditions. Pests such as slugs and snails represent significant threats, particularly to the succulent emerging shoots during the spring season. Due to its slow propagation rate, conservation-oriented horticulture is emphasized, ensuring that specimens are sourced from legal nurseries rather than wild populations.
