Balansa's broom

Balansa's broom (Cytisus balansae) is a low-growing, dense shrub belonging to the legume family (Fabaceae). This species is well-regarded for its compact, mound-like growth habit, which allows it to thrive in harsh environments where other shrubs might struggle.

The plant originates from the Iberian Peninsula and parts of North Africa. Its natural habitat consists primarily of rocky mountainous regions, where it has evolved to tolerate intense solar radiation and minimal soil development.

Botanically, Cytisus balansae features small, tough leaves and produces abundant yellow flowers during the flowering season. Its branching structure is robust, enabling the plant to withstand high winds and heavy snow loads in its native alpine settings.

Regarding cultivation, the plant requires excellent drainage and full sun exposure. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and does not perform well in waterlogged or overly fertile soils, which can lead to root issues. Soil pH should ideally be neutral or slightly acidic.
