Prostrate broom (Cytisus supinus) is a perennial shrub belonging to the Fabaceae family. Known for its low-growing habit and adaptability, it serves as a functional plant in both agricultural landscaping and soil conservation projects. It is frequently recognized by its distinct yellow flowers and resilient growth structure.

The plant is native to Central and Southern Europe, inhabiting dry, sunny environments, open woodlands, and rocky slopes. Its natural range indicates a high tolerance for varied light conditions, although it performs best in full sun. This geographic distribution confirms its ability to thrive in temperate climates with well-defined seasonal cycles.

Botanically, the plant grows to a height of 50–80 cm, often spreading horizontally. Its leaves are trifoliate and covered in fine hairs, which help the plant retain moisture during dry periods. The yellow, pea-like flowers appear in clusters at the tips of the shoots, typically blooming from late spring through early summer, which makes it a valuable early-season pollen source.

Agricultural requirements focus on well-draining soil, ideally sandy or loamy textures, as the plant does not tolerate waterlogging. Maintenance is relatively low-intensive, consisting of occasional weeding and pruning to maintain the desired shape and plant vigor. Being a hardy species, it withstands winter cold well, though young plants may benefit from protective mulching in particularly harsh climates.

The primary economic use for prostrate broom includes soil stabilization on embankments and erosion control due to its spreading root system. Furthermore, it is a beneficial plant for biodiversity, supporting local pollinators.
