The native distribution of this plant is strictly limited to the high-altitude regions of Mount Kinabalu on the island of Borneo. In this habitat, the species occupies zones defined by frequent cloud cover, high rainfall, and thin, nutrient-poor, rocky substrates, making it a specialized endemic species of significant ecological importance.
Botanically, it features scale-like leaves that are tightly appressed to the stems, an evolutionary strategy to minimize water loss and withstand strong mountain winds. The wood structure and reproductive anatomy are consistent with other members of the Podocarpaceae family, adapted for survival in stable yet physiologically demanding high-elevation niches.
