Dactylanthus taylori, widely known as the wood rose, is an obligate root parasitic plant belonging to the family Balanophoraceae. It is a highly specialized plant that lacks chlorophyll and relies entirely on its host tree for water and nutrients, which it obtains through specialized organs that penetrate the roots of the host.
Originating and endemic exclusively to the native forests of New Zealand's North Island, the plant is not a cultivated agricultural crop in any traditional sense. Instead, it is a highly protected botanical rarity that requires deep-forest conditions to thrive, making it an object of conservation rather than commercial agriculture.
Botanically, the plant is remarkable for its woody tuberous structures, which form around the roots of trees like Pittosporum and Coprosma, resembling the shape of a flower when unearthed—hence the common name 'wood rose'. Above the soil, only the fleshy inflorescences appear, which emit a distinct scent designed to attract indigenous short-tailed bats for pollination.
The ecological requirements for Dactylanthus taylori are extremely stringent. It thrives in dense, old-growth forests with rich soil conditions and a stable microclimate.
