Dactylorhiza hatagirea is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Orchidaceae family. It is widely recognized in traditional medicine as the primary source of 'Salep', a nutritious flour made from the dried, ground tubers of the orchid. This plant is highly valued for its therapeutic properties, which include restorative, emollient, and soothing effects due to its rich content of mucilage, sugars, and essential minerals.

The native range of this species extends across the high-altitude regions of the Himalayas, including parts of India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. It typically thrives in sub-alpine and alpine meadows at elevations ranging from 2,500 to 4,000 meters. Due to its slow growth rate and the high market demand for its medicinal tubers, wild populations are currently facing severe depletion, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable agricultural cultivation.

Botanically, the plant features a robust, upright stem that can reach heights of 60 cm, adorned with alternate lanceolate leaves. Its most distinctive features are the palmately lobed tubers, which store energy for the plant's dormancy. The inflorescence is a dense, terminal spike of vibrant purple or pink flowers, which appear during the short growing season characteristic of high-altitude habitats.

Cultivating Dactylorhiza hatagirea is challenging because it requires specific ecological conditions that mimic its natural alpine environment. Successful growth depends on cool temperatures, high atmospheric humidity, and a well-draining, slightly acidic soil substrate rich in organic matter. Soil aeration is critical, as the roots are highly susceptible to rot if the medium remains waterlogged for extended periods.

The main challenges in commercial production include managing soil-borne pathogens, particularly fungal rots, and the complexity of propagation.
