Elder-flowered orchid

The Elder-flowered orchid (Dactylorhiza sambucina) is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Orchidaceae family. It is a highly specialized species that stands out in the botanical world due to its distinct coloration and its ability to thrive in montane and hilly landscapes across Europe, making it a subject of interest for both researchers and enthusiasts.

Originating from the mountainous regions of Europe, the species is found in meadows, pastures, and light forests. It prefers habitats with well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils. In cultivation, recreating this specific environment is essential for the plant's survival, as it depends heavily on symbiotic relationships with soil fungi (mycorrhiza) for nutrient absorption.

Botanically, the species is characterized by its dactyl-shaped tubers, which serve as storage organs. The stems reach heights of 15–30 centimeters, carrying leaves that are clustered at the base. The inflorescence is a dense spike, and one of the most interesting features is its color polymorphism: individual plants produce flowers that are either yellow or reddish-purple, often occurring within the same population.

Agricultural and gardening requirements focus on drainage and light conditions. The plant performs best in locations with partial shade and excellent air circulation. The substrate should be a loose, airy mixture of soil, leaf mold, and grit. Over-watering is the most common cause of failure, as the tubers are highly susceptible to rot when exposed to excessive moisture for prolonged periods.

In terms of usage, the plant is primarily utilized in ornamental horticulture and botanical collections rather than traditional agriculture. While generally robust in its natural habitat, it is susceptible to pests such as slugs and snails that feed on tender foliage. Furthermore, improper soil preparation can lead to various fungal pathogens, making strict adherence to horticultural hygiene and optimal site selection crucial for success.
