This deciduous tree is globally recognized for its dense, durable, and highly decorative heartwood, which features a distinct reddish-brown color, often marked with dark streaks.
The species is native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, primarily thriving in Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. It is typically found in mixed deciduous forests, where it prefers well-drained slopes and areas with distinct seasonal climates. Its adaptation to these conditions is a major factor in the high quality and hardness of its timber.
Botanically, the tree is characterized by alternate, pinnate leaves and small, fragrant inflorescences. As a legume, it has an efficient root system, often interacting with symbiotic bacteria to fix nitrogen.
