The plant originates from the arid, mountainous regions of northeastern Mexico. Due to its adaptation to harsh desert environments, it thrives in regions with intense solar radiation and minimal rainfall. While primarily grown as an ornamental plant in botanical gardens and modern landscapes, it is a significant species for xeriscaping, as it requires very little water once established.
Botanically, this species is noted for its slow growth rate and impressive longevity. As it matures, the trunk becomes more distinct, and the plant may eventually produce a tall, narrow inflorescence containing thousands of tiny, cream-colored flowers. This blooming event is an infrequent occurrence, adding to the high ornamental value of established specimens in a garden setting.

In terms of soil composition, a sandy, rocky, or gravelly mix is essential to prevent water accumulation near the root crown.
