Degenia velebitica

Degenia velebitica is a unique perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Brassicaceae family. It is a monotypic genus, represented by a single species that is a strictly protected endemic to the Velebit mountain range in Croatia.

This species has an extremely limited distribution area, occurring primarily in the extreme conditions of high-altitude limestone screes. From an agronomic and botanical perspective, the plant is not a commercial crop but serves as an object of exceptional scientific and conservation interest, representing unique evolutionary adaptations.

The botanical features of Degenia include its miniature size, dense cushion-like growth form, and dense pubescence, which helps the plant retain moisture and protect itself from intense ultraviolet radiation. The grayish leaves are gathered in rosettes, and during the flowering period, the plant produces short stems with bright yellow flowers characteristic of the Brassicaceae family.

The climate and soil requirements of Degenia are highly specific: it is adapted to harsh mountain environments characterized by significant temperature fluctuations, strong winds, and low nutrient availability. It prefers stony, well-drained alkaline substrates, and any attempts at ex-situ cultivation require the precise simulation of alpine microclimatic conditions.

Economic use of Degenia is non-existent as the plant is strictly protected and considered a symbol of the Croatian flora. In terms of potential research, it remains an important genetic resource for studying plant adaptation mechanisms to extreme abiotic stressors in high-altitude habitats.
