Description
Glacier larkspur (Delphinium glaciale) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Ranunculaceae family. It is one of the most altitude-tolerant species in its genus, specialized for life in extreme environments located at the edge of the permanent snow line.
The origin of this species is traced to the high mountain ranges of Central Asia, specifically the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau. It thrives in alpine meadows and scree slopes at elevations ranging from 4,000 to 6,000 meters, where the climate is characterized by short growing seasons and significant diurnal temperature fluctuations.
Botanically, Delphinium glaciale exhibits a dwarf habit, which is an evolutionary response to severe environmental stress. The plant features a basal rosette of leaves and dense inflorescences. The dark pigments in its flowers are believed to aid in thermoregulation, allowing the plant to remain active at lower ambient temperatures.
Agronomic requirements are focused on mimicking the harsh conditions of its habitat. Soil must be mineral-rich, stony, and exceptionally well-drained. In a cultivated setting, the plant requires cool night temperatures and consistent air circulation, as it is highly susceptible to heat stress and excessive moisture which triggers root rot.
