Tatsien delphinium (Delphinium tatsienense) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Ranunculaceae family. Unlike taller, more common varieties of delphinium, this species is noted for its compact size and sturdy habit, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens and borders where height needs to be managed carefully.

The origin of this species is traced to the mountainous regions of China, particularly Sichuan. Due to its alpine heritage, the plant is remarkably well-adapted to cooler climates and exhibits high cold tolerance. It thrives in environments that offer fresh, moving air and avoid the extremes of stagnant heat, reflecting its natural high-altitude habitat.

Botanically, the plant features erect stems typically reaching 30 to 60 centimeters in height, topped with striking blue to violet inflorescences. The foliage consists of deeply divided leaves forming a dense basal rosette. The plant typically blooms in mid-summer, providing a vibrant display of color that is highly attractive to various pollinators.

Cultivation requires a location with full to partial sun and, most importantly, soil with excellent drainage. This species is prone to root rot if left in waterlogged conditions, so it is essential to incorporate organic matter and grit to ensure moisture does not pool around the base. Regular feeding with a balanced fertilizer during the early growth season supports vigorous bloom production.

In terms of practical use, it serves primarily as an ornamental species for landscapes and rockeries.
