Sticky larkspur

Sticky larkspur (Delphinium viscosum) is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Ranunculaceae family. It is distinct within its genus due to the presence of glandular trichomes on its stems and foliage, which provide the characteristic sticky texture that gives the species its specific name.

The plant originates from high-altitude mountainous environments, occupying subalpine niches. This natural habitat has resulted in an evolutionary adaptation to cool climates, high light intensity, and well-drained rocky soils. Cultivation in garden settings requires careful simulation of these drainage conditions.

Botanically, Delphinium viscosum forms robust clusters of foliage topped by spikes of flowers. Each flower displays the classic delphinium structure, featuring a spur that is essential for pollination.
