Dendrobium draconis

Dendrobium draconis is a distinct orchid species belonging to the Orchidaceae family. It is highly valued in horticulture for its stunning, fragrant white flowers that feature a striking red or orange-marked throat, resembling the traditional imagery of a dragon, which gives the plant its name.

The species originates from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, including countries like Thailand, Myanmar, and Vietnam. As an epiphyte, it typically grows on tree trunks and branches in high-humidity canopy environments, which dictates the specific requirements for its cultivation in greenhouses or controlled domestic environments.

Botanically, it is characterized by sympodial growth with upright, cane-like pseudobulbs covered in unique black, bristly hairs. The leaves are leathery and oblong, supporting the plant's survival through seasonal variations in light and moisture availability common in its native habitat.

Cultivation requires a specific environment: it thrives in bright, filtered light and needs an airy, loose substrate such as pine bark to ensure proper root aeration. A clear distinction between a warm, wet growing season and a cooler, drier rest period is essential to stimulate flowering for the next cycle.

Commercially, it is treated as a premium ornamental crop. Growers must be vigilant against common pests such as aphids and spider mites. Furthermore, regular monitoring for root rot is necessary, as this orchid does not tolerate waterlogged conditions and requires excellent drainage to remain healthy.
