Description
Heath aster (Symphyotrichum ericoides) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Known for its small, needle-like foliage that mimics true heather, this species is highly valued for its late-season bloom. Its architecture makes it an excellent choice for naturalistic planting schemes and low-maintenance ornamental gardens.
The plant is native to North America, where it naturally inhabits dry prairies and open fields. This evolutionary background makes the Heath aster exceptionally well-suited to tough environmental conditions. It is cultivated commercially and privately for its hardiness, drought tolerance, and ability to thrive in poor soils where other ornamental species might struggle.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by a bushy growth habit reaching up to 1 meter in height. It features numerous thin stems adorned with narrow, sessile leaves. From late summer through autumn, it produces an abundance of small, daisy-like flowers with white or light blue ray florets and yellow centers, creating a blanket of color that persists even after the first light frosts.
Cultivation requirements are relatively straightforward. The species prefers full sun exposure and well-drained soil. It is notoriously drought-tolerant once established and does not require intensive fertilization. Regular division every few years is recommended to maintain vigor and prevent the center of the plant from becoming woody or bare.
