Carnation

Carnation (lat. Dianthus caryophyllus) is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family. It is one of the most significant commercial floral crops globally, highly valued for its aesthetic appeal, long shelf life, and versatility in various floral arrangements.

The plant originates from the Mediterranean region. Through centuries of selective breeding, it has been adapted for cultivation in diverse climates. Today, the majority of global production occurs in controlled greenhouse environments, which allows for year-round harvesting and precise quality management of the stems and flowers.

Botanically, the carnation is characterized by its glaucous, narrow leaves and nodes on the stems. The flowers are generally terminal and can be single or double, appearing in a vast spectrum of colors. The root system is fibrous and requires a well-structured, porous medium to prevent oxygen deficiency and support vigorous development.

Cultivation requirements involve maintaining an optimal temperature range of 15–20°C and ensuring high light intensity, which is critical for flower initiation. The soil or substrate must be well-drained with a neutral pH. Proper irrigation scheduling is essential, as excessive moisture often leads to root rot issues, which are the most common challenges in commercial greenhouses.

The primary agricultural and commercial uses of carnation include:

The main plant health risks are fungi, particularly Fusarium oxysporum, which causes vascular wilting. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, including biological controls and targeted pesticide application, are essential for maintaining greenhouse hygiene and plant vitality.
