Garden pink

Garden pink (lat. Dianthus plumarius L.) is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family. Known for its fringed, highly fragrant flowers and dense mats of glaucous foliage, this species is a staple in ornamental horticulture. It is prized by gardeners for its winter-hardy nature and the ability to thrive in poor, rocky soils where other ornamental plants might struggle.

Originating from parts of Central and Southern Europe, the plant has a wide distribution in temperate zones globally. It is commonly found in alpine meadows and limestone habitats, which dictates its preference for well-drained, alkaline to neutral soil conditions. As a crop, it requires open sites with full sun exposure to maintain its compact, mound-forming habit and ensure prolific blooming during the summer season.

Botanically, the plant features narrow, grass-like leaves covered in a waxy bloom that aids in water retention. The flowers possess distinctively serrated or feathered petals, ranging in color from white to deep pink or purple. Its root system is fibrous and shallow, which makes the plant susceptible to root rot if the soil remains waterlogged for extended periods, necessitating excellent drainage in the planting bed.

Agrotechnical management requires minimal intervention but relies on consistent practices: regular deadheading encourages a second flush of flowers, while spring applications of balanced fertilizer boost vegetative growth. The plant is drought-tolerant once established, but supplemental watering is recommended during extreme dry spells. Propagation is typically achieved via division of older clumps or through seed germination in controlled conditions.

Common phytosanitary concerns include fungal diseases like rust (Uromyces dianthi) and leaf spot, which are often exacerbated by poor air circulation. Pests such as aphids and spider mites can infest the foliage, especially in hot, dry conditions.
