While not a conventional agricultural crop, it is an essential organism in bryology and ecology, recognized for its ability to colonize extreme environments where most vascular plants struggle to establish, thus serving as a pioneer species in harsh landscapes.
The plant has a circumboreal distribution, being widespread throughout the Arctic, sub-Arctic, and mountainous regions across the Northern Hemisphere. It primarily grows on rocky outcrops, acidic boulders, and occasionally on mineral-rich soil. Its presence is strongly associated with stable, non-calcareous substrates found in both alpine and temperate regions.
Botanically, it forms dense, low-growing tufts that are typically yellow-green or dark green. The leaves are narrow and linear-lanceolate; when dry, they twist and curl significantly, which is the defining characteristic that gives the species its name. The moss is highly resistant to desiccation, employing physiological mechanisms to survive prolonged periods of drought and freezing temperatures.
Requirements for growth include high light intensity and excellent drainage, as the species is sensitive to waterlogging. There is no traditional agronomic management for this moss, as it is strictly a wild species. However, experimental cultivation for research requires a stable, humid environment with a substrate that mimics the acidity and nutrient-poor status of granite or schist rocks.

Because it is highly sensitive to pollutants, particularly sulfur dioxide, its health serves as a proxy for air quality. In its natural habitat, the moss is rarely affected by pests, though it may encounter pathogenic fungi if exposed to stagnant moisture for extended durations.
