Native to the regions of South Africa, the plant is well-adapted to rocky habitats and high-altitude grasslands. This geographic origin dictates its cultural requirements: it thrives in environments that mimic its natural stony, well-drained slopes. In temperate climates, it is typically treated as a specimen plant, often requiring container cultivation to protect it from extreme winter soil freezing.

Botanically, Dierama trichorhizum is characterized by its rhizomatous bulb structure and long, slender, rigid leaves that provide structure throughout the growing season. The inflorescences are its most striking feature; the stems are remarkably strong yet flexible, allowing the flowers to sway gently in the breeze.
