It is widely recognized for its botanical curiosity: when the white flowers become wet with rain or dew, their petals turn transparent, appearing like glass. Once the moisture evaporates, the petals revert to their opaque white color.
The plant is native to the cold, moist, mountainous woodland regions of Japan and the Russian Far East, specifically Sakhalin. In its natural habitat, Diphylleia grayi grows as part of the forest understory, thriving in cool, shaded environments. This geographical origin dictates its specific needs in terms of climate and growing conditions, as it is highly sensitive to heat and direct sunlight.
Botanically, this species is characterized by large, maple-like leaves and small white flower clusters.
