Dischidia major, commonly referred to as the ant plant, is an intriguing epiphytic species belonging to the Apocynaceae family. Native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, this plant has evolved to thrive in high-canopy environments where it grows on tree trunks rather than in soil.
The geographic range of this species extends across tropical forests in Indonesia, Malaysia, and parts of the Philippines. It is naturally adapted to survive with minimal nutrient access, relying on its distinct morphology and biological associations to meet its physiological requirements.
Its most notable botanical feature is the modification of some leaves into hollow, bladder-like structures. These organs provide a nesting site for ants, which in turn provide the plant with nutrients through their waste and carbon dioxide, a classic example of myrmecophily in the plant kingdom.
Cultivation requires specialized care mimicking its natural tropical habitat. A well-draining, airy medium—such as orchid bark, charcoal, and sphagnum moss—is essential to prevent root rot. The plant thrives in bright, indirect light and demands high humidity levels to maintain the integrity of its succulent leaves.
