River rose

River rose (Bauera rubioides) is a charming evergreen shrub native to eastern Australia and Tasmania, belonging to the family Baueraceae. Often known for its profuse, rose-like flowers, this plant has become a popular subject in temperate gardening, valued for its delicate appearance and extended blooming season during the spring and summer months.

In its native habitat, this species is typically found in moist, sandy soils along creek banks and in protected gullies. This ecological background dictates the primary horticultural requirements: the plant thrives in acidic, well-draining soils that retain consistent moisture. It does not tolerate prolonged drought or alkaline soil conditions, which can lead to rapid nutrient deficiency and chlorosis.

Botanically, Bauera rubioides is characterized by its slender, arching stems and distinctive trifoliate leaves that give the plant a dense, bushy habit. The flowers are small but occur in such abundance that they can completely cover the foliage. The species is relatively hardy but performs best in sheltered locations protected from harsh winds and intense, drying sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves.

Successful cultivation requires attention to the following maintenance practices:
