Livingstone daisy

The Livingstone daisy (Dorotheanthus bellidiformis) is a low-growing annual plant belonging to the Aizoaceae family. It is widely recognized for its vibrant, daisy-like flowers and succulent foliage, making it a popular choice for gardeners looking for colorful, drought-tolerant ground cover during the summer months.

Originating from the Cape region of South Africa, this plant has adapted to thrive in sunny, arid conditions. In agricultural and horticultural contexts, it is grown globally in temperate zones as a decorative annual. Because it is highly frost-sensitive, it is typically sown in spring once the danger of night frosts has completely passed.

Botanically, the plant features fleshy, spoon-shaped leaves covered in tiny bladder cells that glisten like dew or ice crystals under sunlight, which is why it is sometimes called the 'ice plant'. The stems are prostrate or trailing, allowing the plant to spread rapidly and form a thick, colorful carpet that reaches a height of about 10 to 15 centimeters.

Cultivation requirements focus on maximizing sun exposure and ensuring excellent drainage. The species performs poorly in shaded areas where flower buds fail to open. Sandy, well-draining soil is essential to prevent root rot, which is the primary cause of plant failure. While the plant is drought-tolerant once established, moderate watering is necessary during prolonged heatwaves to maintain vibrant blooming.

The primary horticultural use of Dorotheanthus bellidiformis is in rock gardens, borders, and hanging baskets. It is remarkably resilient to harsh sunlight but remains susceptible to fungal diseases if planted in heavy, waterlogged soil.
