Subnival whitlow-grass (Draba subnivalis) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Brassicaceae family. Naturally adapted to high-altitude environments, this species is known for its compact, cushion-forming growth habit, which acts as a survival mechanism against the harsh, windswept conditions of subnival alpine zones.

The native habitat of Draba subnivalis is strictly confined to mountainous regions characterized by rocky slopes, screes, and alpine crevices. Due to the extreme environment, the plant has developed high physiological resistance to cold and a very efficient, though brief, growth cycle. In horticulture, it is considered a rare specimen primarily used in specialized rock gardens.

Botanically, the plant features small, pubescent leaves arranged in basal rosettes, which help mitigate water loss. The inflorescences are short, bearing small, four-petaled flowers typical of the mustard family. This structural adaptation allows the plant to maximize reproductive efforts during the limited window of the alpine summer when temperatures are favorable for development.

Cultivation requirements for this species are rigorous, focusing heavily on soil and drainage management. The plant demands a mineral-based substrate with excellent drainage; organic-rich soils are generally detrimental as they promote excessive growth and susceptibility to rot. A common technique is to use a coarse grit or scree mix that prevents moisture from accumulating around the plant's crown.

In terms of management, the main direction of use is ornamental, aimed at replicating high-altitude ecosystems in a controlled environment. The plant is prone to fungal pathogens, particularly root rot, if the soil remains waterlogged or the humidity is too high. Pest control is generally minimal, but protection from excessive moisture during the dormant season is critical for maintaining healthy, long-lived specimens.
