It is recognized as a trailing or spreading subshrub that can form dense mats, making it an excellent choice for groundcover in arid environments. This species is part of the group of plants commonly referred to as "ice plants" due to the glistening, moisture-storing papillae on its leaves.

The native range of this species is located in South Africa (Cape Province), where it thrives in rocky, well-drained soils and high-sunlight conditions. It has been introduced to various Mediterranean climates globally, including parts of Australia and California, where it is cultivated for its resilience to drought and its ability to stabilize poor-quality, eroded soils.

Botanically, the plant features small, cylindrical, succulent leaves covered with trichomes, giving them a frosted appearance. During the blooming season, the foliage is almost completely obscured by numerous vivid purple or pink flowers. Its root system is shallow but highly efficient at absorbing sparse water, which is a key adaptation to its arid evolutionary background.

Cultivation requirements focus on providing full sun and exceptionally sharp drainage. Drosanthemum hispidum does not tolerate "wet feet" and is susceptible to root rot if soil moisture remains too high for extended periods. It is best grown in sandy, gritty, or rocky soils that do not retain water. Regular pruning after flowering is recommended to keep the plant compact and promote vigorous branching for the following season.

Economically and horticulturally, this plant is used extensively in xeriscaping, coastal planting, and rock gardens. It is highly valued for its ability to cover large areas with minimal input.
