Cape sundew

The Cape sundew (Drosera capensis) is a carnivorous perennial plant native to the Cape region of South Africa, belonging to the Droseraceae family. It is a highly specialized plant that has adapted to nutrient-poor environments by evolving sticky, glandular tentacles on its leaves to trap and digest small insects, which provides essential nitrogen and minerals.

Being one of the most resilient and popular carnivorous plants, it is widely cultivated by both hobbyists and botanical institutions globally. Unlike many other exotic species, Drosera capensis is known for its vigor and ability to thrive in various artificial environments, making it an excellent choice for those new to carnivorous plant cultivation.

Botanically, the plant grows in rosettes of narrow, strap-like leaves. These leaves are covered in glistening trichomes that secrete mucilage, which acts as both an attractant and a digestive trap. When an insect lands on the leaf, the plant slowly curls around its prey, secreting enzymes that dissolve the insect's soft tissues. It also produces elegant pink or white flowers on tall spikes, which are capable of self-pollination.

For successful cultivation, strict adherence to specific agricultural requirements is mandatory. The potting medium must be entirely nutrient-free, typically consisting of a mixture of peat moss and perlite. Irrigation must be done exclusively with distilled, reverse osmosis, or rainwater; tap water containing dissolved minerals will eventually kill the plant's delicate root system.

Typical threats include aphids, mealybugs, and fungal growth caused by stagnant air; maintaining good ventilation and proper hygiene is critical for plant health.
