The oblong-leaved sundew (Latin: Drosera intermedia) is a carnivorous perennial herb belonging to the Droseraceae family. As a highly specialized botanical species, it thrives in nutrient-poor wetland habitats, utilizing its predatory mechanism to derive essential nitrogen and minerals from insect prey trapped on its glandular leaves.
The species has an extensive distribution range, spanning parts of Europe, North America, and South America. Historically, it is found in oligotrophic habitats such as peat bogs and wet sandy shores. Its survival depends on stable hydrological conditions, which are critical for both its physiological processes and its propagation in artificial environments.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by a stemless rosette of spatulate leaves that are covered in sticky, mucilage-secreting trichomes. Its inflorescences typically produce five-petaled white flowers that rise above the rosette.
Cultivation requirements are strict and differ significantly from standard agricultural practices. The plant necessitates a substrate composed primarily of acidic peat or long-fibered sphagnum moss. It is extremely sensitive to dissolved solids; therefore, only distilled or deionized water should be used for irrigation. Sunlight exposure must be abundant to maintain the plant's characteristic coloration and vigor.
