Reed canary grass

Reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) is a tall, perennial, rhizomatous grass belonging to the Poaceae family. It is widely recognized for its robust growth habit and its ability to thrive in a diverse range of environments, particularly those where soil moisture levels are too high for conventional forage crops.

Native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, this grass has been introduced globally as a versatile agricultural crop. It naturally colonizes riverbanks, marshes, and wetlands, but in an agricultural context, it is cultivated for its rapid biomass production on marginal and poorly drained lands that are often deemed unsuitable for other cereal or forage species.

Botanically, the plant develops an extensive system of underground rhizomes, allowing it to form dense, monoculture stands. The stems can reach heights of up to 2 meters, supporting long, flat leaves. This dense vegetative structure is highly effective at competing with weeds and preventing soil erosion in sensitive watershed areas.

Cultivation requires minimal input once established, though optimal yields are achieved on fertile, moist soil with adequate nitrogen fertilization. Agronomic management involves timely harvesting—ideally before the heading stage—to maximize protein content and digestibility. Unlike many other grasses, it is relatively resistant to lodging and winter kill.

The plant serves multiple purposes, primarily as a high-yielding forage crop for hay and silage. In recent years, it has gained significant traction as a dedicated energy crop for biomass combustion. Due to its resistance to common pests and diseases like ergot or rust, it requires fewer chemical interventions, making it an environmentally friendly option for large-scale land management.
