Barth's Echinodorus

Barth's Echinodorus (Echinodorus barthii) is a popular aquatic plant belonging to the Alismataceae family. As a hybrid cultivar, it is highly sought after in the aquarium hobby for its vibrant reddish-brown foliage and robust growth habit, making it an excellent centerpiece for larger freshwater tanks.

The origins of the genus trace back to the tropical regions of South America. While the plant grows in riverbanks and swampy wetlands in the wild, the cultivated variety is bred specifically for ornamental use in captive aquatic environments, having no traditional agricultural use as a food or industrial crop.

Botanically, this species is characterized by a dense rosette of large, long-petioled leaves. The underwater leaves exhibit a stunning dark red to brownish-red coloration, which provides a vivid contrast to other green aquatic plants. The leaf blades are structurally rigid, which contributes to their durability in various water currents.

Cultural requirements involve high-intensity lighting and a nutrient-rich substrate. The plant thrives in temperatures ranging from 22 to 28 degrees Celsius and prefers slightly acidic to neutral water. Regular supplementation of iron and CO2 injection is recommended to maintain the deep red pigmentation of the foliage and ensure healthy leaf development.
