Tower of jewels

Tower of jewels (Echium simplex) is a remarkable biennial herb belonging to the Boraginaceae family. It is distinct for its monocarpic growth habit, meaning it grows as a vegetative rosette of leaves during its first year, then produces a massive, spike-like inflorescence reaching up to 2 meters in height during the second year before the entire plant dies.

The native habitat of this species is restricted to the Canary Islands, specifically Tenerife, where it thrives on rocky, arid slopes. The cultivation of Echium simplex in agricultural or horticultural settings requires a Mediterranean-like climate. The plant demands excellent solar exposure and is highly susceptible to frost, making it suitable mainly for mild temperate or subtropical zones.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its narrow, hairy leaves and dense, white or cream-colored racemes that can contain thousands of small flowers. The taproot is deep and efficient, allowing the plant to draw nutrients from rocky substrates. This architectural structure makes it a highly prized specimen in botanical gardens and specialized landscaping.

In terms of agronomy, the soil must be exceptionally well-drained. The species prefers sandy or gravelly soil types with low fertility. Over-watering is the most common cause of plant failure, leading to root rot. Successful cultivation requires a balance of moderate irrigation during the active growth phase and nearly complete drought during dormancy, particularly in winter.

Economically, it is primarily used as an ornamental plant due to its unique silhouette. It is also highly regarded for its potential to support local populations of bees and other pollinators. Pests to watch out for include aphids and mealybugs, which may infest the leaves. Pathogens are usually limited to fungal rot issues induced by improper moisture management in the root zone.
