Elatostema edule

Elatostema edule is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Urticaceae family. Unlike many members of this family, which are known for their stinging hairs, this species is completely harmless and is widely recognized as a valuable edible green in its native tropical regions.

The plant originates from the tropical regions of the South Pacific and Southeast Asia, including islands like Fiji and Vanuatu. It naturally thrives in the understory of moist tropical forests, preferring shady and humid environments where the soil is consistently damp and rich in organic matter.

Botanically, Elatostema edule features succulent stems and broad, alternate leaves. It is a shade-tolerant plant that spreads readily in favorable conditions. The small flowers are produced in dense heads in the leaf axils, and the plant's growth pattern makes it an excellent candidate for ground cover in food forests.

Cultivation requires specific environmental conditions to ensure high yields. It needs a tropical climate with temperatures between 20-30°C and high humidity. Soil must be kept moist but well-drained, as waterlogging can lead to root pathogens. Propagation is typically achieved through stem cuttings, which root easily in damp, nutrient-rich media.

In terms of хозяйственного использования (agricultural use), the leaves and young shoots are harvested for human consumption, often cooked similarly to spinach or water spinach. The plant is relatively resistant to major pests but can be affected by snails and occasional fungal infections if airflow is insufficient or humidity is excessive.
