African goosegrass

African goosegrass (Eleusine africana) is an annual grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. It is a robust plant species known for its adaptability to various tropical environments, functioning as both a forage source and a grain-producing crop in specific agricultural contexts.

The origin of this species is centered in sub-Saharan Africa. It has spread across various tropical and subtropical regions where it is valued for its hardiness. African goosegrass typically grows in disturbed areas, grasslands, and traditional agricultural plots, showing a strong ability to colonize different types of habitats.

Botanically, it features tufted, erect or spreading stems reaching heights of up to one meter. The inflorescence consists of characteristic finger-like spikes. The leaves are generally narrow, linear, and may have a rough texture, which provides a degree of physical defense against herbivorous pests during the early development stages.

Regarding climate and soil, Eleusine africana thrives in warm conditions with temperatures ranging between 20°C and 35°C. It is relatively undemanding regarding soil fertility, being able to perform well in sandy and loam soils with moderate to low nitrogen levels. The primary agronomic practice involves ensuring proper seed bed preparation and maintaining sufficient spacing for maximum biomass production.

In terms of agricultural utility, it is primarily used as fodder for livestock due to its high biomass productivity and regrowth potential. The grains are also harvested for local food consumption in various regions.
