Known for its medicinal properties, this species is closely related to the well-studied Siberian ginseng, sharing similar biological characteristics while exhibiting unique adaptation traits in its native habitat.
The plant originates from the mountainous forests of China. It is adapted to temperate conditions and thrives in well-drained, fertile forest soils. In cultivation, it requires a sheltered environment, avoiding direct exposure to harsh, dry winds that can damage young shoots and desiccate the leaf canopy.
Botanically, it presents as a multi-stemmed shrub that can reach significant heights. The branches are typically armed with spines, and the foliage consists of distinctive palmate leaves.
