Description
Canadian waterweed (Elodea canadensis Michx.) is a perennial aquatic herb belonging to the family Hydrocharitaceae. In agriculture and aquaculture, it is recognized for its high biomass production rates and its remarkable ability to propagate vegetatively in various freshwater environments.
Native to North America, the species was introduced to Europe in the 19th century and rapidly colonized many habitats, becoming a well-known invasive species. Today, its distribution is widespread across temperate regions globally, where it typically thrives in ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams.
From a botanical perspective, the plant consists of submerged, branching stems that can reach several meters in length. The leaves are arranged in whorls of three, displaying a bright green color and a delicate, translucent texture. The root system is vestigial, as the plant primarily absorbs nutrients directly through its leaves from the water column.
The plant has minimal soil requirements, as it is an aquatic species that relies on water chemistry for growth. It is highly efficient at removing nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, making it an excellent candidate for water purification. However, its aggressive growth necessitates careful management in irrigation systems to prevent complete blockage.
Key areas of agricultural and industrial use include:

Occasionally, excessive epiphytic algal growth may compete for light, but this rarely kills the plant. Management is primarily focused on manual or mechanical harvesting to maintain water flow and ecological balance in controlled settings.
