Giant rye grass (Elymus condensatus) is a tall, perennial, rhizomatous grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. Known for its massive size and dense clumping growth habit, it is one of the most prominent native grasses in its range. It is highly valued in environmental and agricultural projects for its robustness and soil-binding capabilities.

The native range of this species is primarily located in western North America, particularly in California and surrounding areas. It thrives in various habitats, including hillsides, canyons, and riverbanks. The species is well-adapted to the Mediterranean climate, characterized by cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers, which allows it to remain productive under varying moisture levels.

Botanically, it features large, sturdy stems that can grow up to 3 meters in height. The leaves are broad, tough, and glaucous, often persisting throughout the year. Establishment is best achieved through direct seeding, with the most success occurring when moisture is provided until the plants are fully rooted. It is essentially drought-tolerant once established.
