Tall wheatgrass (scientifically known as Elymus elongatus or Thinopyrum elongatum) is a robust perennial grass belonging to the Poaceae family. This species is widely recognized in agronomy for its impressive biomass production and resilience in challenging environmental conditions, making it a key plant for forage and land restoration.
Native to Southern and Eastern Europe and parts of Western Asia, this grass has spread globally due to its remarkable adaptability. It is cultivated in various regions across North America, Australia, and Eurasia, primarily in areas prone to drought or characterized by poor soil quality, where traditional forage crops often struggle to thrive.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by a deep, extensive root system and tall, upright stems that can reach heights of up to 1.5 meters or more. The leaves are typically coarse, bluish-green, and slightly rough to the touch. The inflorescence is a distinct, elongated spike, which facilitates effective wind-pollination and high seed yield per plant.
Agronomically, tall wheatgrass is prized for its high tolerance to saline and alkaline soils, where it often outperforms other common forage grasses. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and demonstrates excellent winter hardiness. Cultivation success depends on proper site preparation, as the seedlings can be slow to emerge; once established, however, the stand remains productive for many years.
