Sea couch grass (Elymus pungens) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. Known for its remarkable tolerance to high salinity and harsh coastal environments, this species plays a vital role in stabilizing ecosystems where other plants fail to thrive.

The plant is native to the coastal regions of Europe and the Mediterranean. It is a classic halophyte, meaning it is specifically adapted to environments with high salt concentrations. It is commonly found in salt marshes, sandy dunes, and along rocky coastlines where it can withstand constant wind exposure and saline soil conditions.

Botanically, this grass is characterized by stiff, narrow leaves and a robust rhizomatous root system.
