The plant originates from the tropical regions of Central America, spanning from Mexico through Guatemala and Belize down to Costa Rica. In its native habitat, it grows as an epiphyte in dry tropical forests, where it has evolved to withstand distinct seasonal changes in moisture, which is a critical factor for its successful cultivation.

Botanically, this orchid is characterized by pear-shaped to ovate pseudobulbs that support two or three leathery leaves. The inflorescence can be either erect or pendulous and is often heavily branched, carrying numerous flowers. The labellum (lip) structure is distinctively shaped, providing the plant with its characteristic appearance.

Agronomically, the plant requires high light levels and excellent airflow to thrive. The substrate must be coarse and well-draining, typically consisting of conifer bark, charcoal, and sometimes perlite.
