Chinese ephedra (Ephedra sinica) is a perennial shrub belonging to the family Ephedraceae. Unlike typical ornamental plants, it is characterized by its distinct, leafless, green, cylindrical stems that perform photosynthesis. It is a hardy species highly valued for its secondary metabolites.
Native to the arid regions of East Asia, including China and Mongolia, the plant is evolutionarily adapted to desert and semi-desert environments. It thrives in regions with low annual rainfall and extreme temperature fluctuations, making it a specialized crop for harsh agricultural zones.
The plant grows as a low shrub, typically reaching 20 to 40 cm in height. It features a deep taproot system which is essential for survival in dry soils. The stems are jointed and produce small, scale-like leaves. Its reproductive organs are small cones, leading to the production of fleshy, berry-like structures after pollination.
For cultivation, Chinese ephedra requires well-drained, sandy or rocky soil with low nutrient levels. It is an extremely photophilic plant that demands full sunlight for optimal growth. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure in cultivation, as excessive moisture leads to root rot and pathogen development.
The primary agricultural and economic use of Ephedra sinica is for the extraction of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine alkaloids. These compounds are critical in the pharmaceutical industry for producing respiratory medications. Beyond medicinal use, it is occasionally utilized in xeriscaping and ecological restoration projects to prevent soil erosion.
