Alpine willowherb

Epilobium anagallidifolium

Description

Alpine willowherb (lat. Epilobium anagallidifolium) is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Onagraceae family. As a typical representative of arctic-alpine vegetation, it is characterized by its low stature and resilience to harsh mountain conditions, often forming loose mats in its natural habitat.

The distribution range of this species covers the mountainous and arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It is most commonly found in damp areas such as stream banks, edges of snowbeds, and rocky seepage sites where moisture is abundant and temperatures remain consistently low throughout the short growing season.

Botanically, the plant is identified by its slender, often reclining stems, which typically reach a height of only 5 to 15 centimeters. Its leaves are opposite, usually oval or lanceolate, and the flowers are small, displaying delicate pink or purple hues, which bloom during the height of the mountain summer.

Cultivation of alpine willowherb requires a specialized approach, replicating the conditions of its native alpine environment. Key factors for success include a cool climate, high atmospheric humidity, and a gritty, well-draining soil medium. The plant does not tolerate high heat or stagnant air, making it a challenging species to maintain outside of specialized rock garden environments.

Economic and practical uses are primarily focused on botanical research and ornamental rock gardening. While the plant is generally hardy and suffers from few pests in its native environment, growers should monitor for common fungal issues such as rust or mildew, which can occur if drainage is insufficient or if the plant is kept in poor light conditions.
