The Dune Helleborine (Epipactis dunensis) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Orchidaceae family. While not an agricultural crop, it is a significant species for botanical study. The plant is noted for its highly specialized ecological niche, which prevents it from being domesticated or grown for industrial or commercial purposes.
The origin and natural habitat of this species are strictly tied to sand dune systems, primarily found in the United Kingdom. It thrives in maritime environments where it has evolved to cope with high levels of sunlight, salt spray, and unstable sandy substrates. It is not cultivated, as it cannot survive outside its specialized natural ecosystem.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by a stem that typically reaches 20–40 cm in height, with spirally arranged leaves. Its inflorescence consists of small, often greenish-purple flowers. The plant has developed unique reproductive strategies, including the ability to self-pollinate, which ensures its survival in environments where insect pollinators might be scarce.
The environmental requirements for the Dune Helleborine are extremely rigid. It strictly requires calcareous sand dunes and, crucially, a symbiotic relationship with specific soil fungi (mycorrhizae) to germinate and survive. Because of this, it has no agricultural production protocols, and any attempts to transplant it into non-native soil usually result in rapid plant decline.
There is no economic or commercial use for this species, as it is protected by law. The conservation of this orchid focuses on managing its environment rather than agricultural techniques. Common threats include:

- human activity and trampling;
- habitat loss due to scrub encroachment;
- climate-driven changes in water tables.
