The plant originates from the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. Its natural habitat is defined by warm temperatures and moist conditions, protected from harsh direct sunlight by the surrounding vegetation. These environmental factors must be considered when cultivating this species in artificial settings.

Botanically, Epiphyllum baueri is characterized by flattened, leaf-like stems that perform photosynthesis. The edges of these stems contain areoles where flowers typically emerge. Its root system is relatively shallow, specialized for absorbing nutrients and moisture from organic debris accumulated on tree branches or in crevasses.

Successful cultivation requires a porous, well-draining substrate rich in organic matter, such as coco coir, bark, and perlite. The plant thrives in bright, indirect light; excessive exposure to the sun will scorch the stems. Water management is critical; the soil should remain slightly moist but never waterlogged to prevent root rot.
