Meadow horsetail

Meadow horsetail (Equisetum pratense) is a perennial, spore-bearing plant belonging to the Equisetaceae family. Within agricultural systems, it is recognized as a persistent species that thrives in specific ecological niches, often signalling poor soil drainage or high acidity in managed grasslands and agricultural fields.

The plant has a broad distribution across the temperate and boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It is frequently found in moist meadows, riverbanks, and woodland edges. Understanding its habitat preferences is essential for land management, as the presence of Equisetum pratense is a reliable bio-indicator of environmental conditions that may inhibit the growth of more desirable forage species.

Botanically, it is characterized by dimorphic stems, though it is the branched vegetative stems that are most commonly observed during the growing season. The plant possesses a deep, creeping rhizome system that allows for rapid regeneration after mechanical damage. This underground network is the primary factor that makes meadow horsetail difficult to eradicate from affected fields.
