Great horsetail (Latin: Equisetum telmateia) is a robust perennial pteridophyte belonging to the family Equisetaceae. It stands out among horsetails for its significant size and distinct structural morphology, serving as a relic of ancient vegetation that once dominated the Earth's flora.
The native distribution of this species covers regions across Europe, Western Asia, Northern Africa, and North America. It is typically found in habitats characterized by high moisture levels, such as damp woodlands, riverbanks, and shaded areas where groundwater seeps are common, reflecting its physiological need for consistent hydration.
Botanically, the plant displays distinct dimorphism between its reproductive and vegetative structures. In the spring, the plant produces fleshy, spore-bearing stems that are pale in color, followed by the emergence of tall, green, vegetative stalks that can exceed 1.5 meters in height, adorned with numerous whorled branches.
Regarding agrotechnology, successful cultivation depends on maintaining high soil moisture levels and providing partial to full shade. It thrives in loamy, nutrient-rich soils that do not dry out during the growing season.
