Willmott's horsetail (Equisetum willmottii) is a perennial spore-bearing plant belonging to the Equisetaceae family. It is a natural hybrid resulting from the crossing of Equisetum hyemale and Equisetum ramosissimum. This plant is highly prized in horticulture for its distinct architectural aesthetic and its ability to maintain a lush, green appearance throughout various seasons.
The plant originates from regions with temperate climates, typically thriving in habitats characterized by high moisture levels. Its natural distribution is linked to areas like riverbanks, marshes, and wetland margins. Due to its specific hybridization origin, it occupies specialized ecological niches where water availability is constant, which has informed its primary cultivation requirements.
Botanically, the plant consists of erect, slender, and rigid dark green stems reaching heights of 50 to 100 cm. These stems are hollow, ribbed, and lack true leaves, which are replaced by small sheaths at the stem nodes. The root system is comprised of vigorous rhizomes that allow the plant to colonize available space rapidly, forming dense, uniform stands that are aesthetically striking.
Cultivation of Equisetum willmottii requires a consistent moisture supply.
