Ercilla vine

Ercilla volubilis is a perennial evergreen woody vine belonging to the Phytolaccaceae family. This plant is highly valued in gardening for its ability to quickly cover vertical structures, creating a dense and attractive foliage screen thanks to its glossy, leathery leaves.

Native to the temperate and subtropical regions of Chile and Argentina, this plant thrives in the wild within moist forests. In its natural habitat, it uses its specialized adventitious roots to climb tree trunks, reaching significant heights, which makes it a distinctive representative of South American flora.

Botanically, the culture is a robust vine with shoots that can extend several meters in length. The leaves are oval-shaped with a leathery texture and a deep green color. Flowering occurs in the spring, producing small, white to cream-colored flowers arranged in dense, spike-like racemes, which give the plant a unique architectural appearance.

For successful cultivation, Ercilla requires sheltered areas protected from strong winds with moderately moist, well-draining soil. The plant prefers partial shade or dappled sunlight, as direct harsh sun may cause leaf scorching.
