Hedgehog broom

The hedgehog broom (Erinacea anthyllis) is a long-lived, evergreen dwarf shrub belonging to the Fabaceae family. Known for its distinctively dense, cushion-like growth habit and sharp, spine-tipped branches, this plant is a prized specimen for xeriscaping and alpine rock gardens.

Native to the Western Mediterranean, specifically parts of Spain, France, and Northwest Africa, this species has evolved to thrive in harsh, exposed limestone habitats. Its natural environment consists of dry, sunny mountain slopes where it survives under intense sun and limited annual precipitation.

Botanically, it is defined by its slow growth rate and rigid, spiny stems that branch repeatedly. The leaves are sparse, small, and often ephemeral, placing the primary responsibility for photosynthesis on the chlorophyll-rich stems. During late spring, the plant produces attractive, pea-shaped blue or violet flowers that form vibrant clusters against its greyish-green foliage.

Agronomic requirements for this culture are focused on drainage and light. It demands full sun exposure and poor, well-drained, alkaline soils. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and does not require fertilization. In cooler climates, providing winter protection or growing it in pots is often necessary to ensure survival against excessive moisture and frost.
