Broad-leaved cottongrass

Broad-leaved cottongrass (Eriophorum latifolium) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Cyperaceae family. In agricultural and horticultural contexts, it is recognized for its unique adaptation to wetland habitats and its ornamental value, particularly during the seed-bearing stage when the plant produces distinctive white, fluffy bristles.

The native range of this species extends across much of Europe, the Caucasus, and parts of Western Asia. It typically inhabits fens, marshes, and damp meadows, specifically those with calcareous, nutrient-rich soils. Unlike some other species of the genus, Eriophorum latifolium is specifically associated with base-rich environments rather than acidic peat bogs.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its tufted growth habit and leaves that reach a width of up to 8 mm, setting it apart from more slender-leaved relatives. The flowering stems are triangular and smooth, ending in drooping clusters of flowers. The white, cotton-like appendages are actually modified perianth parts that aid in wind dispersal of the seeds.

Cultivation requirements are strict regarding moisture management. The species requires consistently wet or waterlogged soil throughout the growing season. In terms of agronomy, it is essential to ensure the soil pH is neutral or slightly alkaline, as the plant does not thrive in highly acidic conditions. Regular monitoring of the hydrological balance is necessary to prevent the substrate from drying out.

Economically, its primary use lies in wetland restoration, ecological landscaping, and biofiltration systems. The plant contributes to stabilizing pond banks and improving water quality through natural nutrient uptake. While the species is generally robust, potential health issues include fungal leaf spots, which typically occur only under conditions of poor air circulation or stagnant, heavily polluted water environments.
