The Transvaal red balloon (Erythrophysa transvaalensis) is a distinctive deciduous shrub or small tree that belongs to the Sapindaceae family. It is highly valued in horticulture for its spectacular display of bright red, bell-shaped flowers and its unique, papery, balloon-like seed capsules that provide year-round ornamental interest.
Native to the regions of South Africa, specifically the Transvaal, this plant is well-adapted to savanna environments characterized by seasonal rainfall and warm temperatures. Because of its structural beauty, it is frequently cultivated in botanical gardens and landscapes across warm-temperate regions as a showpiece specimen.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by pinnate leaves and complex racemes of flowers. The fruit structure is perhaps its most recognizable feature; the inflated capsules protect the seeds while adding a vibrant splash of color to the plant’s profile.
