Eulychnia castanea is a perennial tree-like plant belonging to the Cactaceae family. In its natural environment, it is an impressive cactus, which, due to its unusual morphology and hardiness, attracts the attention of both collectors and specialists in the cultivation of xerophytic plants in arid regions.
The native range of this species is Chile, where it grows along coastal territories. The cultivation area is limited to specific climatic conditions: the crop prefers zones influenced by marine fogs, which serve as an essential moisture source for the plant during periods of prolonged drought. In artificial settings, cultivation is practiced in greenhouses and specialized nurseries in the subtropical belt.
Botanically, it is a robust plant, often reaching significant sizes. The stem is columnar, densely covered with ribs that hold areoles with stiff spines. One of the distinguishing features of Eulychnia castanea is the presence of the spiralis form, where the stems twist in a spiral, creating a unique decorative effect. Flowering occurs at night, with flowers typically being white or pinkish, adapted for pollination by nocturnal insects.
Agrotechnical requirements include providing maximum light, excluding direct harsh midday sun, and extremely moderate watering. The plant requires a well-drained, mineralized soil with low organic content. It is important to maintain the correct temperature regime: moderately warm during the growing season and cool during winter, which facilitates a proper dormancy cycle and subsequent flowering.
